The Mythological Kimwolf Botnet Has Returned

The Mythological Kimwolf botnet has returned.

In March 2026, the internet infrastructure community celebrated a victory over Kimwolf. In a global coordinated effort involving law enforcement and cybersecurity companies, the botnet's infrastructure was disrupted, and it seemed that Kimwolf had become a myth.

But myths have a way of returning.

In the past few weeks, we've learned about Kimwolf V7 - a new evolution with enhanced DDoS capabilities and more resilient command-and-control infrastructure.

When I first saw the Kimwolf string embedded in this botnet sometime in late 2025, I imagined the hacktivist group behind it had named it as a reference to the Nordic mythological hero Beowulf - as, in their eyes, it was fighting modern internet conglomerates and colonizing governments.

But in our digital reality, Kimwolf is a modern Grendel, and the cybersecurity engineers building defense technologies are the modern Beowulfs, standing day and night on guard to keep the internet a safe place.

Particularly, Cisco Secure DDoS Edge Protection now includes a botnet management feature that tracks infected devices, including those infected with Kimwolf, detects the start of any malicious activity, and blocks it at its origin.

Or, in other words, Cisco's modern Beowulf is capable of keeping this modern Grendel in his cave - and making sure it stays there.
